Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV) typically manifests in adult goats as severe arthritis in the carpal joint (“big knee”). Infected animals experience weight loss despite maintaining a good appetite and exhibit reduced milk production. Serological studies indicate that CAEV is widely present in goat herds across different continents.

On the other hand, Maedi-Visna Virus (MVV) is characterized by slowly progressing arthritis, pneumonia, mastitis, and encephalomyelitis in sheep. MVV infection is known to be widespread globally.

Maedi-Visna and Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis are viral diseases that affect sheep and goats, leading to significant economic losses. The causative agents of these diseases belong to a group of lentiviruses known as small ruminant lentiviruses (SRLV). SRLVs primarily include Maedi-Visna Virus (MVV), which is mostly found in sheep, and Caprine Arthritis Encephalitis Virus (CAEV), which commonly infects goats, along with other variants.

These viruses persist for the lifetime of the infected animal and often progress without symptoms. However, in some animals, gradually worsening disease syndromes may develop over time, for which there is no cure. The most common syndromes in sheep include respiratory distress (maedi) and neurological symptoms (visna), both of which can ultimately be fatal. In adult goats, chronic progressive arthritis is frequently observed, while in young goats, encephalomyelitis may develop. Additionally, outbreaks of arthritis in sheep have occasionally been reported.

Mastitis is also frequently observed in both sheep and goats. The economic losses caused by these diseases vary between herds due to factors such as marketing and export restrictions, early culling, and reduced milk production.
